Arc-Fault Protection in PV: Practical Notes for 1000V/1500V Strings

High-voltage PV strings (1000V and 1500V) improve efficiency, but they also make fault management more critical. One issue is arc faults. They can occur at connectors, cable damage points, or degraded terminations. Unlike short circuits, a series arc may persist without a dramatic current increase.

That is why arc-fault detection standards and test methods matter. Many engineers reference IEC 63027 when discussing DC arc detection and interruption concepts for PV systems. In practice, you should not treat AFCI as a replacement for fuses/MCBs or SPDs. Instead, treat it as an additional protection layer that targets the “difficult” faults that overcurrent devices may not clear fast.

When you evaluate an AFCI combiner solution, check the system voltage rating, string count, expected string current, and how the unit trips (contactor/breaker). Also plan clear labeling and as-built documentation to support O&M.
